Earl Grey Milk Tea

This Earl Grey milk tea is a boba-style tea drink made with strong black tea, sweetened condensed milk, and milk for a rich, creamy flavor. It’s inspired by bubble tea shops and can be served over ice with or without tapioca pearls.

Earl Grey Milk Tea vs London Fog Latte

  • Milk tea: iced, sweet, boba-style, dessert-like
  • London Fog: warm, lightly sweet, tea latte
  • Milk tea uses condensed milk; London Fog uses steamed milk + vanilla

If you’re looking for a warm, less sweet version of this drink, try my London Fog latte.

Ingredients for Earl Grey Milk Tea (boba style)

You can make this milk tea with or without tapioca pearls. The base requires just three ingredients: Earl Grey tea, sweetened condensed milk, and milk. From there, you can customize sweetness and texture to your preference.

  • Single-serve Earl Grey tea bags
  • Boiled water
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Milk – I like 2% or oat milk for optimal creaminess

How to make Earl Grey Milk Tea

If you want to use boba pearls, make those first.

boba pearls being strained after being boiled

Next, boil water and steeping the Earl Grey tea with 4 tea bags for about 6 minutes to create a strong base.

Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and regular milk until fully combined and smooth.

Add ice and cooked tapioca pearls (if using) to glasses, then pour the tea mixture over the top.

Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.

If you’re making this as a bubble tea, use a boba straw so the tapioca pearls can pass through easily.

This Earl Grey milk tea comes together quickly and tastes just like a boba shop drink at home. I make with sweetened condensed milk for ultimate creaminess and a heavier sweetness that is typical of boba shop teas. If you like things less sweet, simply start with less condensed milk, taste and adjust to your preference.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 single-serve earl grey tea bags
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/3 cup 2 % milk
  • 1/2 cup tapioca pearls (optional)

Instructions

  1. If you’re using tapioca pearls, make these first. Boil 5 cups of water for every 1/2 cup of pearls.
  2. Then drop the pearls into boiling water (carefully) and wait for them to float to the surface. Boil about 3 minutes more. Carefully remove from water using a slotted spoon and place in a small dish until ready to use. I add a few tbsp of water to them if I’m not going to use immediately. *see notes about sweetening the boba pearls
  3. Make the tea: Steep tea bags in boiling water for 6 minutes.
  4. Add sweetened condensed milk and stir until fully incorporated. Add regular milk and stir.
  5. Split the tapioca pearls between 2 glasses, add ice to each and split the milk tea between the 2 glasses.

Notes

*The tapioca pearls I’ve linked in the post are not sweet at all. The instructions on the boba package say to roll the pearls in sugar or to drizzle them with honey after you’ve boiled them. I didn’t add any sugar because the tea is already fairly sweet. You might find you want to sweeten the boba too.

  1. Wayyyyy too sweet! Next time I’ll just add the condensed milk to taste because 1/3 cup of it is way too much for my taste.
